What Are Dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic dental restorations designed to replace multiple missing teeth or entire arches of teeth. Our team has extensive experience restoring teeth lost to advanced decay, gum disease, damage, or injury, and we look forward to helping you regain function and good oral health. You'll have options with your dentures, and we'll help you pick the best choice to replace your teeth.

Most denture options consist of artificial ceramic or porcelain teeth supported by a base of body-safe pink acrylic designed to resemble healthy gums. To meet your needs, we offer both full and partial dentures, as well as implant-supported dentures and All-on-4®. We also provide same-day dentures, so you never have to go without a fully functioning smile.

Our Denture Placement Procedure

At our initial appointment, we'll perform a thorough oral examination and determine the condition of your entire mouth. At this time, we'll form a plan regarding what the best option is for restoring your smile. We will do everything possible to make the process work alongside your everyday life, like placing immediate dentures after extractions so you retain oral function.

The stages of your treatment will usually include:

  1. Extraction Appointment: To make space for your denture, we remove your back teeth first, leaving your front teeth intact. At this point, we'll fit you with a temporary immediate denture anchored to your front teeth to provide full smile function while you heal.
  2. Healing Time: After your extractions, your mouth will need time to heal. After approximately six weeks, you'll return to our practice for final denture placement.
  3. Denture Preparation: Our team will perform precise imaging of your dentition which will be used to make your denture. Denture creation is highly customizable, and we will select teeth shapes and color shades that fit you best.
  4. Dentures: After healing, you'll return for your final denture placement. We'll extract your front teeth and place the new denture, which is carefully created using the impressions we take.
  5. Relining: After three months, you'll return so we can reline your denture and ensure a good fit after normal gum shrinkage has occurred.

With proper care, your denture should last many years. We use high-quality materials and processes and work with skilled dental labs to create your prosthetic, so you can trust in the durability of your new smile. However, if any issues arise with the fit or your dentures are damaged, we offer relining and can assist in repairing broken dentures.

Kamloops Denture FAQs

Dentures are a well-established dental treatment, however it's natural to have some questions about the process of getting them and how to take care of them. Some of the frequently asked questions we receive from our patients include:

Can I sleep with my dentures in?

You can sleep with dentures on, however, we don't recommend doing it often. Removing your dentures at night gives your gums and jawbones a chance to relax from the pressure your denture can put on them. It also gives you a good chance to perform the required oral hygiene steps. You should never wear your dentures for 24 hours without cleaning and soaking them. However, if you need to wear them at night on occasion, it won't cause problems as long as they're properly cleaned at some point during the day.

While it might take some practice at first, you can eat normally soon after getting dentures. Getting used to eating hard or sticky foods may take some extra time. If you're struggling with certain foods, denture adhesive may help stabilize your prosthetic.

Dry mouth is a common problem for many people and affects many older people with dentures, however, dentures are not necessarily the cause. In fact, when first wearing dentures, some people may experience the overproduction of saliva. If your denture does not fit well as your gums adjust, it can contribute to some of the symptoms of dry mouth, but it is not the root cause. That's why it's important to contact our dentist if you're struggling with an ill-fitting denture.
